Brown Eyes

Brown eyes that have known many summer’s past.
The parade of life through generations.
Loved, all loved with a maternal heart
from lullaby to grave.

Brown eyes that cried a million tears;
heart rent; injustice visited upon injustice.
Still longing to see a new dawn of hope.
restoration; peace; flourishing.

Brown eyes steeped in the older ways
of richness, culture, form and ceremony.
Of dreaming; of the land and of ancestors.
A rich living history.

Brown eyes that know the power of tradition;
that passing on brings hope, forms identity.
Place-name, dreaming, old souls breathing life.
Elders honoured, culture cherished.

Brown eyes reveal a beautiful soul;
honoured, loved, adored.
For all that wisdom has ever known
is held here and revered.
