A dog came woofing at my door,
a mutt I’d never seen before.
He wagged his tail and gave a grin.
and so, of course, I let him in!
And there he made himself at home
as if he’d been here all along.
a strange sensation – de ja vu!
it seemed to me he belonged here too!
And so we played and rolled around,
such fun with this new friend I’d found.
I scratched his ear, he licked my face
and shed is hair about the place.
But life, you know, is more than play
and I had lots to do each day.
So ‘doggo’s’ life became a bore;
chin on paws upon the floor.
I clean forgot my friend at home
and he got bored there home alone.
He chewed the lounge and ate a chair;
he created havoc everywhere.
He chewed the door, he ate my shoe
And as he ate, boy! How he grew!
To twice the size he was before,
as big as a horse – and even more!
And then one day as I came in,
I could not help but notice him.
His massive frame pushed at the walls;
I barely could get in at all!
He had the saddest eyes you see,
staring down, he looked at me.
and in my soul I felt so sad
that I had ignored my friend.
As I stroked away his pain,
he became his normal size again.
He wagged his tail about the place
and licked and licked and licked my face.
I also felt this joy inside,
and happiness I could not hide
I’ve learnt now never to ignore
my inner canine friend.
