(Silence gives consent)
I opened my mouth to speak,
Like so many times before.
Words formed in my head
But nothing came out.
Like the chrysalis’ struggle to be free
To take flight on gossamer wings
Only to be taken by a blackbird
On thieving wing.
And I thought…
How many times?
How many times before had I thought to speak
To say what needed to be said
To stand in the breach
To say: enough is enough?
And it occurred to me…
